Risk Assessment Or Risk Management?

Risk Assessment is the process of estimating the likelihood of an outcome.

The problem with risk assessment in psychiatry like all other parts of medicine is that our assessment of risk is never fully complete and that we are often talking about risk over a long period of time, such as a lifetime, rather than the period we actually have with the person we are attempting to assist.

Prediction is not the same as prevention.

And there are many potential risky outcomes in mental health, including:

  • Harm to self
  • Harm to others
  • Iatrogenic
  • Incomplete Recovery
  • Chronicity of Impairment
  • Physical Health impairment
  • Long-term psychosocial impacts
