Another Case

An unidentified patient who appears to be in his 20s is brought to the psychiatric emergency room by the police from the community. The officers accompanying him explain that he was detained after an unprovoked assault on a pedestrian. They explain that they thought the patient to be in need of psychiatric evaluation due to his agitation, talking to himself, and poor self-care. The police have completed a section 22 form, requiring the man to be assessed. The patient is handcuffed and restrained physically by police, is agitated, and is responding to internal stimuli, responding to questions by triage staff primarily with disorganized, profane ramblings. When asked whether he wants to remain in the hospital, his response indicates that he believes the police and hospital staff to be fellow spacemen who have returned him to the mother ship.
